NUS BBA
Accountancy Internship
Students who are in the BBA (Accountancy) programme are required to complete a mandatory minimum of 8 weeks of accounting or finance related internship. This is part of the academic requirement, prior to graduation.
For most students, it is envisaged that the compulsory internship will be completed from immediately after the final exams at the end of Year 3 Semester 1 (start of December) till the end of January. This is because this period falls within the peak period of the major accounting firms and so the number of internship positions offered by the Big 4 is higher. However, with effect from 2010, students who are able to secure a suitable internship during the May to July period after Year 2 may use it to fulfill the compulsory internship requirement. Note that internship application is a competitive process, so students should not assume they can definitely secure an internship during the summer period in the planning of the sequence of modules required for completing the degree.
Students should ensure that they have completed a considerable number of accounting modules including audit and tax so as to be equipped with the necessary accounting knowledge to perform well on the job. Internship which is purely administrative in nature will not be recognized as a fulfillment of the compulsory internship requirement.
Students embarking on the yearend (Dec-Jan) internship should take note that the modules for the modified Semester 2 after the internship have to be all accounting modules as classes of these modules will be specially arranged to start in the first week of February. Students who embark on the May-Jul internship will attend the modified Semester 2 insofar as accounting modules are concerned, but have the option to also take non-accounting modules that commence classes in January.
BIZ Career Services will be working closely with the major accounting firms to source for suitable internship opportunities for our accountancy students. We will publicize the opportunities via the regular email announcement and post the positions on our TalentEDGE portal for application. You will have to apply and submit your cover letter, resume and other required documents if you are keen to pursue the positions that are available.
Once you have secured an internship, please come by BIZ Career Services office to complete the internship agreement form prior to commencement of your attachment. We will be sending your internship appraisal form to the respective firms, two weeks before the end of your internship.
At the end of your compulsory internship, you are required to submit a two-page (single-line spacing) internship report to BIZ Career Services within two weeks. This report (together with the appraisal form) will be reviewed by the school to determine if you have fulfilled the internship requirement. Click here for the internship report guidelines.
