NUS BBA

Special Programmes

  • Overview of BIZ + USP

The USP is NUS' premier leadership programme that provides the multidisciplinary intellectual grounding to nurture the personal, intellectual and leadership qualities of promising students. It aims to create a close-knit liberal-arts experience for the select group to develop these qualities that are necessary to shape our cultural perspectives and national priorities, and to guide Singapore in this 21st century.  This programme is therefore particularly suitable for bright and ablest students in the NUS Business School.

USP is weaved into the four-year BBA/BAC Honours programme.

University Scholars must show consistently good performance in order to stay in the programme and to proceed on to Honours. University Scholars in the NUS Business School are not required to read the Business Communication module offered by the School, as well as some or all of the regular University-Level Requirements (depending on the cohort).

All USP students are expected to fulfil a two-year commitment of living in the USP residential college (Cinnamon College) in their first year and one other. Our students enjoyed and treasured the camaraderie within the vibrant USP community.

USP offers students many exclusive overseas opportunities. USP students on overseas exchange may be able to map modules read on exchange unto USP modules, with USP office's approval. Please refer here for the details.

USP students who completed the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) 12-month programme are deemed to have fulfilled two HSS and two ST Inquiry-tier modules (including ISM requirements).  For USP students matriculated in 2011 and before, their NOC experience would have fulfilled the USP Advanced Curriculum requirements. Please refer here for the details.

    2. Three categories of Independent Study Modules are available to USP Scholars at the NUS Business School:

       (i) Individual or Small Group Study: Students are to undertake an individual reading, research or project course, or form groups of up to a maximum of 7 members, identify a faculty member who is willing to supervise the individual or group, and negotiate with the potential supervision the topic and its coverage, the requirements and deliverables for the ISM. Typically, students will be expected to engage in lots of reading, making presentations and criticizing articles. Students are also expected to write one or several reports, depending on the negotiation with the supervisor.

(ii) Modified regular modules: students could opt to do any of the approved 3000/4000-level classes. In opting for this, students will, in addition to the regular requirements for the course, negotiate with the instructors involved for additional requirements. This additional load is expected to be at least 20% more than the normal requirement of the module concerned.

(iii) 5000 or higher level Master's course based modules: Students undertaking the earlier USP curriculum (2011 and before) could opt to do any of the approved 5000-level research coursework modules. In opting for this, students will attend the same classes as the graduate students and will be expected to engage in the same assignments and reports expected of the class.
